Our virtual pipeline (VPL) is an innovative energy delivery system that transports renewable compressed natural gas (RCNG) without relying on traditional underground pipelines. Instead of fixed infrastructure, a virtual pipeline uses mobile transport and modular equipment to deliver gas safely and efficiently - functioning like a physical pipeline, but with far greater flexibility. This approach is ideal in locations where permanent pipeline construction is impractical, cost-prohibitive, or time-intensive.
A natural gas virtual pipeline system typically includes:
Compression or Liquefaction Facilities
At the source, gas is compressed (CNG) or liquefied (LNG) to reduce volume and make it safe and economical to transport.
Transportable Containers
The compressed or liquified gas is transported in specialized, road-ready containers rather than through buried pipe infrastructure.
Strategic Storage
Storage solutions at the source, destination, or intermediate points help ensure continuous supply and accommodate fluctuations in demand.
Regasification or Decompression Units
At the delivery site, the gas is returned to its usable gaseous state through decompression or regasification systems.
Why Choose a Virtual Pipeline?
Virtual pipelines are especially valuable for:

Mobius Renewables can also direct-inject RNG into an interstate pipeline or deliver directly to the end user. We currently own and operate two pipeline injection sites in the United States (in North Carolina and South Carolina), and over 20 dispensing units throughout Norway and Sweden.
Direct injection provides significant advantages for project partners and offtake customers. By interconnecting directly with an interstate pipeline, RNG gains immediate access to established transmission infrastructure — enabling broad market reach, improved pricing optionality, and reliable delivery to high-demand regions. It also streamlines gas quality control, metering, and compliance with pipeline specifications, ensuring consistent performance and regulatory alignment.
For customers, this means greater flexibility in structuring offtake agreements, reduced transportation complexity, and faster monetization of environmental attributes. For project owners, it enhances asset value, reduces bottlenecks, and positions the project for long-term scalability within the broader natural gas network.
At Mobius Renewables, safety is our top priority in every aspect of our gas transportation process. We understand the critical importance of safe handling, transportation, and delivery of natural gas, especially in the renewable energy sector. Our commitment to safety includes:
